The Kingfisher Club have been running kids swimming lessons for over 30 year, and are proud to follow the nationally recognised Swim Ireland Learn to Swim programme which is designed to empower and inspire children to challenge and push their swimming abilities further. The Learn to Swim programme focuses on repetitive, accurate and quality practice through structured play ensuring each lesson is taught through a great mix of fun activities. Our trained swim instructors will work with your child through different swim levels to give your child the best learning experience possible in a safe, fun & friendly learning environment where all children can learn at a pace that suits them.
Whether your child is a beginner, improver or even an advanced level swimmer our award winning Kingfisher Swim Academy has something to help your child improve their swimming confidence and skills even further! Our swim instructors will work with your child to teach them essential water skills and get them comfortable in the water. DISCOVER EACH LEVEL OF OUR KIDS SWIMMING LESSONS
Level 1 - Tadpole
Tadpole’s is our introduction level to swimming where we aim to teach basic pool rules and how to safely get in and out of the pool in a fun learning environment.
- Understanding of basic pool rules
- Enter and exit pool safely with assistance
- Entry to water from sitting position
- Walk with shoulders submerged and blow bubbles
- Kick at wall face submerged
- Kick on front with aid unassisted
- Kick on back with aid unassisted
- Regain feet from floating with an aid unassisted
Level 2 - Jellyfish
Our Jellyfish level reinforces basic pool rules while learning new skills such as balance, rotation, flotation to develop water confidence while laying the foundation for stroke technique
- Understanding of basic pool rules
- Enter and exit pool safely without assistance
- Push and glide on front and back with aid unassisted
- Front crawl kick arms outstretched 3 metres
- Backstroke kick arms by side 3 metres
- Regain feet without aid unassisted
- Pick up items from pool floor
- Star float on front and back
Level 3 - Clownfish
The Clownfish level aims to wean children off the buoyancy aids while introducing basic strokes.
- Safe entry from a sitting position
- Floating position on front and back for 10 seconds
- Front crawl arm action with board 5 metres
- Backstroke arm action with board 5 metres
- Demonstrate breaststroke arm & leg action individually
- Rotate 360 degrees without touching the pool floor
- Push and glide on front & back regain feet
- Demonstrate body and head rotation for breathing
Level 4 - Goldfish
The Goldfish level builds upon the skills taught in Level 3 but with a stronger focus over a longer distance and aim to achieve deep water confidence.
- Demonstrate a sitting dive and glide
- Push and glide on front and back holding glide for 2 meters
- Tread water using an aid for 15 seconds
- Sculling while floating
- Turn from front to back while swimming
- Front crawl 8 metres breathing to the side
- Backstroke 8 metres keeping head still
- Breaststroke 5 meters
Level 5 - Octopus
The Octopus level is an introduction into deepend swimming we focus on retaining the skills learned in Level 4 but over a longer distance without stopping. Introduction to dives is brought in with pencil dives.
- Rules and safety skills while swimming in deep water
- Push off under water and kick in streamlined position
- Swim front crawl for 10 meters breathing to the side
- Swim backstroke for 10 meters turning hand out
- Swim breast stroke for 8m
- Tread Water 30 seconds
- Push, glide and surface dive to retrieve object from pool floor
- Pencil dive
Level 6 - Swordfish
The Swordfish level swimmers are bilateral breathing and more emphasis on technique particularly the timing of the breathing and the leg kick with correct foot position. Swimmers become stronger in all strokes and on longer distance.
- Demonstrate a kneeling and crouching dive and swim out
- Surface dive and retrieve object from pool floor
- Demonstrate understanding of bi-lateral breathing
- Tread water head clear of water for 30 seconds then swim 12m
- Swim 2x12m front crawl with good technique breathing without stopping
- Swim 2x12m backstroke with good technique without stopping
- Swim 10m breaststroke & Butterfly kick 12m
- Using a pull buoy scull 10m on front head first and feet first
Level 7 - Stingray
The Stingray is an introduction into lane swimming while constantly emphasizing good stroke technique, swimmers learn to swim more efficiently and are introduced to some fun drills, basics of tumble turning.
- Rescue Stroke 12m
- Demonstrate a forward somersault from floating
- Using a pull buoy scull 12m on front and back head first and feet first
- Swim 25m front crawl and backstroke with good technique
- Swim 12m breaststroke with correct timing
- Attempt butterfly arm and leg action together for 5 metres
- Push, glide and streamline under water for 5 meters
- Tread water attempting eggbeater kick for 45 seconds then swim 25m

Developed especially to appeal to 8 to 12 year olds, with fun activities, the Rookie Lifeguard scheme teaches children how to swim and enjoy water safely, whether in shallow or deeper water.
The Rookie Lifeguard programme teaches valuable survival, rescue and sports skills in an exciting fun environment to get children involved. The course can run parallel to your child’s current swimming lessons and will enhance the skills they learn in the pool.
This programme offers an opportunity to gain skills in water safety and confidence in the water. It will help keep your child, their friends and family safe in the water as they lead toward the series of awards.
Rookie Lifeguard programme begins with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progresses to Stage 3 of the Gold Award where our Rookie Lifeguards perform impressive lifesaving tows.
Rookie Lifeguard is part of the ASA Learn to Swim Pathway developed by the Amateur Swimming Association. The Rookie Lifeguard Water Safety Award fulfils all of the Key Stage 2 water safety elements of the National Curriculum and is taught by RLSS UK approved instructors.
Even the shyest kids find they make new friends through the Rookie Lifeguard scheme, as teamwork and peer support are crucial elements of the programme.
